Out of the Darkness: A Community Walk for Suicide Prevention, Hope, and Healing

On October 12, 2024, Betty Virginia Park in Shreveport was filled with a powerful message of hope, healing, and solidarity. The Northwest Louisiana Out of the Darkness Walk, organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Louisiana Chapter, brought together organizations and individuals from all walks of life to stand united against the stigma of mental illness and to raise awareness about suicide prevention. This annual event is one of many Community Walks held across hundreds of cities nationwide, forming the heart of the Out of the Darkness movement, which began in 2004.

Walking Together for a Cause: Suicide Prevention and Awareness

The Out of the Darkness Walks are more than just events; they are an opportunity for people to share their stories, find comfort, and build a community that is informed, compassionate, and proactive about mental health. Every step taken symbolizes courage—the courage to open up about personal connections to the cause and to foster a culture that supports mental health awareness. As friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers walked side by side, they honored the memories of loved ones lost to suicide and stood in support of those who were struggling.

This year’s event was particularly significant as the mental health challenges brought on by recent years have underscored the urgency of suicide prevention. Now, more than ever, communities need to unite in safeguarding mental health, supporting those who may be struggling, and ensuring that no one feels they are walking through their pain alone. The collective energy at the Northwest Louisiana Walk was a testament to the power of community, resilience, and shared purpose.

Johnson Behavioral Health Group’s Role in the Movement

To show Johnson Behavioral Health Group’s commitment, we proudly participated as one of the event’s sponsors. Being present in this kind of movement was not just about sponsorship but about being part of a larger national movement to save lives and bring hope to individuals affected by suicide. As an organization, team, and advocate of mental wellness, we are dedicated to promoting mental well-being and supporting those who need it. Our involvement in this walk reinforced this mission.

In addition to participating in the community walk, JBHG set up a booth to engage with participants of all ages. We encouraged children and adults alike to express their creativity by decorating and drawing on pumpkins, creating a fun and relaxing environment celebrating self-expression. Our team also gave away drawing books, pens, booklets, and other school supplies for kids, emphasizing the importance of nurturing mental wellness from a young age.

Continuing the Conversation

The Northwest Louisiana Out of the Darkness Walk is a reminder that while we have come a long way in breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, there is still much work to be done. Events like these serve as a crucial platform to educate, inspire, and offer support to ensure that no one has to walk alone on their journey. Johnson Behavioral Health Group is honored to have been a part of this movement, and we remain committed to advocating for mental health awareness and providing personalized care for those in need.

The walk may be over, but the journey toward a smarter, more compassionate culture around mental health continues. By supporting initiatives like the Out of the Darkness Walk, we can help create a world where conversations about mental health are open, supportive, and empowering. Together, we can bring light to the darkness and hope to those who need it most.
